Popularly known as Nanasaheb Goray, Narayan Ganesh Goray was born on 15th June 1907 in a middle class family at Hindale, a remote village in Sindhudurg then Ratnagiri District of Konkan in Maharashtra. N.G. Goray studied in Fergusson college, Pune, where he graduated in 1929 and took his LL.B. in 1935. As a young man he came under the influence of Gandhiji 's teachings and actively participated in the salt and forest satyagraha movements in the early thirties. He took part in the 'Quit India' movement of 1942 and was imprisoned and courted arrest on a number of occasions. He took part in a satyagraha at Gulbarga in the former Hyderabad State and was kept in confinement.

 

He was a founder member of congress Socialist Party since 1934 till it was dissolved. After  independence Goray was one of the top national leaders of the Socialist Party and was Chairman of the Praja socialist Party for five years. Goray also took part in satyagraha movement, for liberalisation  of Goa from Portuguese imperialist domination and was jailed for some time. He was mayor of Pune  in 1968-69.  N.G.  Goray was elected to Rajya Sabha in 1970  and continued as Member of Parliament upto 1976. Thereafter he served  as High Commissioner for India in England from 1977 to 1979.

 

Shri Goray was an eminent thinker and an ardent social reformer. Through his prolific writings in English and Marathi, he always made a fervent plea for social justice and equality. He wrote twenty six books in Marathi, which include History of America and books on socialism and Democracy. He also wrote short stories and literary essays. His writing is marked with vigour and an exquisite style. He was a great ratio­nalist and his speeches were hailed for clarity of ideas and for powerful oratory.

 

N.G. Goray passed away on 1st May, 1993.
