A cancellation is a postal marking applied on a postage stamp or postal stationery to deface the stamp and prevent its re-use. Thus a postmark or date stamp is a postal marking made on a letter or package indicating the date and the location where the item was accepted by the postal service.Hence the term “Postal Marking” is used interchangeably with "Cancellation."
