Description
:

This is the Sixth Triennale organised by Lalit Kala  Akademi.  On  each occasion we have been enabled to  view the changes and shifts which have occurred in art in different parts of the world. These changes are also indicative of the different  attitudes towards art. There is a whole range between art as a medium conveying a message and art as a self contained activity with its own internal logic. In a profound sense, the works of each country  reflect perhaps  only partially, the life experience of that country. Thus the Triennale offers not only a variegated feast for the eyes, but insights into the sensibilities and concerns of different countries which are represented here.

There are 42  countries  participating in this Triennale with works of art covering paintings, drawings, graphics of different kind, sculptures executed  in stone; wood, fibre glass and terracotta; constructions in wood and metal, earth works, and works executed in multimedia. There is also an enormous variation in scale from works which are small and delicate to works which are  enormous and powerful.

It is a tribute to the power of art that countries with conflicting ideologies are able to share a common roof. In keeping with its philosophy of non-alignment it is the privilege of our country to provide this opportunity.

An international jury consisting of five persons will adjudge ten awards of Rs. 50,000 each. The awards are made available in foreign exchange for foreign recipients. The Indian section has been selected  by   Mr. R.B. Bhaskaran and Dr. Shail Choyal. There are 78 artists represented with a total of 186 works. This is the first time that the entire Triennale has been accommodated in the premises of the Akademi.

The Department  of Posts is privileged to issue a special postage stamp on the occasion of the VI Triennale-India being held in New Delhi.
