Dr Yusuf Dadoo Street (formerly Grey Street) in Durban’s CBD is where Gandhi first stayed when he arrived in South Africa as a Guest of Abdulla. The street is named after Anti-apartheid activist Dr Yusuf Dadoo, whose father was once defended by Gandhi in court, when the Krugersdorp Municipality was attempting to evict him from his shop on racial grounds. Dadoo was inspired by Gandhi’s Satyagraha campaigns and led similar peaceful protests in South Africa in the 1940s.
