Birth Place : Ludhiana, Punjab, India
Was an Indian director and producer of Bollywood movies and television serials. Most known for Hindi films like Naya Daur (1957), Kanoon (1961), Gumrah (1963) and Humrāz (1967) and the TV Series, Mahabharat in the late 1980s.
Awarded 2 Filmfare Awards in 1962 & 2008.
Received Padma Shri in 1974, Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 1999 &  Padma Bhushan in 2001.
