Description

Kangra painting is the pictorial art of Kangra in the Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh. It is named after Kangra, a former princely State, which patronized art. It became prevalent in mid-18th century.

One striking feature of Kangra paintings is the verdant greenery it depicts. The style is naturalistic, and great attention is paid to detail. The paintings depict the feminine charm in a very graceful, manner. Facial features are soft and refined. The painters used colours made of vegetable and mineral extracts. The paintings were often large and had complex compositions of many figures and elaborate landscapes.

This painting, created circa 1780 AD depicts the epical hero Rama with his consort Sita during their exile in the forests.
