Dowleswaram is a suburb located at a distance of 8 km from Rajahmundry town. The Dowleswaram Barrage, located on the down stream, is very well known for its ability to sustain the agricultural backbone of East Godavari district. This barrage was built by a British Irrigation engineer, Sir Arthur Thomas Cotton. The river is divided into two streams on the upper part : the Vriddha Gautami to the left and the Vasistha to the right, and this forms the dividing line between the West Godavari and the East Godavari Districts.
