Basara is located on the banks of Godavari River very close to Maharashtra border in the State of Telangana. An important place of attraction on the river banks is Basara Gyana Saraswathi temple which is believed to be the second oldest temple for the deity in India. According to Brahmanda Puranam, Sage Adikavi Valmiki installed the figure of Goddess Saraswathi here, and started the work of Ramayana.
